Omeljan Pritsak Research Center for Oriental Studies

Omeljan Pritsak Research Center for Oriental Studies was founded in 2009, and named in honour of Omeljan Pritsak, a prominent scholar of the twentieth century, professor at Hamburg University, University of Washington (Seattle), Harvard University, Taras Shevchenko Kyiv University, the founder and the first director of the Harvard Ukrainian Research Institute and Ahatanhel Krymsky Institute of Oriental Studies. The center is based on a unique library and archive collection brought to the National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy in 2007. Both the library and the archive collection are now open to the public.

Mission

The primary purpose of the Center is to support Oriental studies activities and achievements in the National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy and in Ukraine in general by organizing academic events, supporting and assisting academic publishing processes, providing access and promoting scholarly heritage of Omeljan Pritsak.

The main aims are:

securing substantial and continuous growth of Oriental studies in academic research and training in Kyiv-Mohyla Academy and beyond basing on Omeljan Pritsak collection
supporting academic and educational research conducted by NaUKMA professors and students in the field of Oriental Studies
cultivating communication, collaboration, and creativity between the leading Oriental studies researchers in Ukraine and abroad

Events

In 2008 Omeljan Pritsak’s library, private archive and art collection were transferred to the National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy. And since then international conferences and other numerous academic events dedicated to his heritage have been organized to commemorate his persona.
